Description Markus Wolff 2009-05-21 09:15:42 UTC
please add an optional USE FLAG fam to xfce-base/thunar,it is running without fam
Please add an optional USE FLAG fam to xfce-base/xfdesktop,it is running without fam. xfdesktop has no RDPEND on fam. But if you have instlall ist on a System where fam is installed, it take it automaticlly. If you deinstall fam than xfdesktop ist not running, needed fam libary then.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Markus Wolff 2009-05-21 09:23:28 UTC
correction: xfce-base/xfdesktop doesent't need fam,its only depend on thunar
Comment 2 Christoph Mende (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-22 19:57:21 UTC
What exactly are you asking for? Thunar hard-depends on virtual/fam and I can't see any switch to disable fam support, so we can't disable the support. The dependency also seems to be an automagic dependency, so if we actually change the current ebuild we get the behaviour described by you.
Comment 3 Markus Wolff 2009-05-23 01:25:17 UTC
Thunar has an hard-depends on virtual/fam, but it only need a soft depend on it. So it will be nicer to have a new flag "fam" on it.
Comment 4 Christoph Mende (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-23 20:41:51 UTC
Yeah, but like I said, there's no switch to enable/disable FAM support for thunar, so the only way would be an automagic dependency which is worse than hard-depending on it
Comment 5 Markus Wolff 2009-05-23 21:46:04 UTC
May you are right.
But i think better than a hard depending is no depending on fam .
The decision, if or if not fam should be supported will decided by thunar for itself. So users with and without fam can install it.

Uhm, no. That kind of dependencies are bad exactly because of what you mentioned in your first post.
Comment 7 Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2009-05-26 19:38:53 UTC
Ok, automagic dependancies are bad. If upstream implements a switch to enable or disable fam support, then we will make a USE flag. Until then, nothing can be done here.

I suggest taking your request to http://bugzilla.xfce.org/

Thanks for understanding and reporting your trials.
