Description Alexey Starinsky 2003-08-21 03:52:23 UTC
When I perform log-in using root account, KDE starts OK. If I try to log-in
using any other user account, kdm window disappears and nothing happends until
I do manual restart of X server by Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

I have two user accounts: 'me' and 'pe'
There are no errors at logs located at /home/pe or /home/pe directories.
The only error type I could find was error messages at xdm.log and
XFree86.0.log that are generated while the login process 'hanging'.

Exaple (the end of xdm.log):

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start xfree or kdm
2.
3.

Expected Results:
It should log-in! :)

Sorry, but haven't done 'emerge info' - the gentoo installation is in my home
PC, but for a while I can say this:

Portage version: portage-20030714.tar.bz2
Architecture: AMD Duron 1000, 256Mb RAM.

If needed, I can specify 'emerge info' output tomorrow.

Do you use tmpreaper. If so clean out the /tmp/.X* /tmp/{kde,ksocket,mcop}-${USERNAME} and /tmp/.ICE-unix directories. Then try whether it works again. Also remove ~/.Xauthority from the user directory

No, I do not use it. Only xfree and kde e-builds were emerged to the system.
Kerenel is vanilla-sources (2.4.21)

Exactly these attemts I have already made yestarday: I cleared all files from /tmp and all files from /home/me except default rc-scripts, but problem persisted.

One more suggestion: even if these files were present there, may be it would be reasonable to perform their deletion before kdm or xfree start (from mentioned locations by some script commands)?

Comment 3 Alexey Starinsky 2003-08-26 01:28:03 UTC
After complete system rebuild from portage-20030817.tar.bz2 this problem (or bug) no more persists. Log-in process works fine. Bug can be closed.
Thanks for everyone for good work!

Ok, closing the bug
