Description zeromaster 2003-08-20 13:27:42 UTC
my errors allways happen while make bzImage ,make modules and modules_install
first i got random segmentation faults until i opend my case.then i began to get
memory access errors,so i took out a noname ram and left an infineon ram
inside.then i tried again it worked once so i started all over again with make
menuconfig.but then i began getting these errors again.then i did make bzImage
,modules,... until it worked(that what i had done before allways came without
compileing).then i wanted to download metalog and vcron but they couldnt compile
and i managed to comile grub only after 3 times trying.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.installation to kernel
2.make dep
3.make bzImage

Actual Results:

sounds like hardware problems ... try running memtest86 and cpuburn ...
Comment 2 zeromaster 2003-08-22 03:12:52 UTC
i did memtest(2 runs) but it didnt show that anything was wrong.i couldnt do cpuburn because it wouldnt start.what can i do to get gentoo running(and able to compile somthing)with my pc?
Comment 3 Martin Holzer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-22 03:25:08 UTC
take a large fan, open case and let it blow into your system.
thermal problems causes this
Comment 4 zeromaster 2003-08-22 03:35:26 UTC
guess what, that was the first thing i did before bugs.gentoo.org and all those forums.i also dont think its a problem of my ram because i took a noname out and left the infineon inside.could it be my mobo?ive got a biostar m6vcf,the mistace i did was buying a prebuilt pc.
Comment 5 Martin Holzer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-22 04:25:49 UTC
maybe try it with a bios update
also watch your ram timings, maybe they are too agressive
Comment 6 zeromaster 2003-08-22 04:33:28 UTC
my boards old so i can forget biosupdates and it wont let me touch ram settings
Comment 7 Tim Yamin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-23 17:04:27 UTC
This reaks of flaky hardware, however: do you get the same error with the same line number if you try this again? If you don't, this is most likely a hardware error [try going into the BIOS to check your CPU temperature. If it's above 55 degrees centigrade or the fan RPM < 2000, you might have problems and the CPU fan might be failing: opening the case usually drops the temperature by around 2 celsius, but if your fan is failing, so does the CPU...]. If you do get the same error, this might be a GCC bug which needs to be sorted out...

Can you please try this and report back...?
Comment 8 zeromaster 2003-08-24 05:44:18 UTC
the error allways comes at a differtent place while compileing the kernel, but wenn i merge something it cant even compile because of a gcc error:
emerge metalog

its not what you said because the fan turns on 4700 rpm but putting a fan next to the open case helped getting rid of the segmentation faults(it might have benn somtihng else than the cpu?) while compileing.
Comment 9 Tim Yamin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-24 05:55:12 UTC
Can you please attach config.log as per the output?

Additionally, can you try using a Gentoo BootCD instead of a Knoppix CD?
Comment 10 zeromaster 2003-08-24 06:39:50 UTC
ive got no idea where the config.log is.i only used knoppix because of the guibecause i thought i was doing something wrong and needed a browser other thn links.
Comment 11 zeromaster 2003-08-24 07:10:42 UTC
i got a segmentation fault useing the gentoo livecd(in floppy.c:1483)
Comment 12 zeromaster 2003-08-24 07:20:22 UTC
i tried again and it doesnt come on the same place
Comment 13 Tim Yamin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-24 07:37:23 UTC
We can't really do much if you get different random errors at random points: all the evidence currently points to flaky hardware... It looks like things are failing randomly, and it's probably your motherboard...

If you manage to continuosly reproduce a certain bug/issue, please reopen this bug. Marking as TEST-REQUEST for now...

Because we can't really pinpoint this to an exact code bug, there's not that much we can do. Please check your hardware...

Do you get strange behaviour [when compiling something] if you try another OS?

Regarding your "segmentation fault" is that the segmentation fault when you build something? What are you compiling, or is that a kernel error. If it's a kernel error, can you attach any messages which might be of use around the OOPS message?

http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/ might be of much interest
Comment 15 zeromaster 2003-08-24 08:06:28 UTC
i get the segmentation faults while make bzImage.could you give me a list of test for my h/w so i can find the problem?
