Description Rance Hall 2003-08-20 11:45:54 UTC
Several Gentoo kernel options include support for the the commercial program
Win4Lin from Netraverse.

I'm a Win4Lin user becuase of work, but the Win4Lin enabled kernels dont have
supermount and some of the other kernel patches that make Gentoo easy to use and
explain to new users.

I'd like to explore the possibility of adding Win4Lin support to the full Gentoo kernel
build and possibly call it the "Gentoo Plus."

I made a copy of the gentoo-r6 kernel and manually tried to patch it with the two
Win4Lin patches.

Since one of the patches is strictly for adding new files to the kernel base it works
everytime. but the main kernel patch has a lot of hunk failures when applied to the
gentoo kernel.

Also, If I take a vanilla kernel and apply the win4lin patches then I cant apply the
supermount patches becuase they fail.

I have the patch.log file created by the failed kernel patch, and the all the modified
source files and the reject files if someone would like to see them.

I will also be willing to test, help maintain, and if possible help develop future kernels
with Win4Lin support.

Thanks

Hi,

Netraverse is working in support to the wolk-kernel, but for the moment only vailla-kernel is officially supported by netraverse. So some of the "special" kernels in sys-kernel have the win4lin patch and functional, for example gs-sources (i use it every day). gs-sources have too a lot of nice patch and features like low-latency or preemtive... so i think that it have all you want.

regards

I have the gs-sources installed on my system, but after running make menuconfig inside the gs-sources dir I find out that it doesnt have supermount.

all of my config files (especially /etc/fstab are setup for supermount.

add supermount to gs-sources and or wolk-sources and I will be just as happy.

I'd also like to see more support for win4lin-sources kernel.

Primarily I need evms2 support since recently after switching to Gentoo (from
SuSE)
I put all my partitions on EVMS2 volumes and win4lin-sources does not support
it.

I have contacted Netraverse support, but they directed me to ask Gentoo people
for
support since " ... Gentoo developers actually do all of the development
and support of the Gentoo Win4Lin-enabled sources."

Sincerely,
Gour

All help will be well received. So i think that the gs-kernel have all features
needed. If you miss some featured, please tell me.

try the new gs-sources version

I would like to add my support to the request for increased Win4Lin support, particularly with the 2.6 kernel. I would like to see the Win4Lin patches included in the gentoo-dev-sources. If necessary, a local USE flag could be used to control if the Win4Lin patches are applied.

these ideas are very nice :)
so i'm not part of the kernel herd. Please reassing this bug to kernel herd.
I reassing this to the gentoo-dev-sources guy.

regards

Where are these patches located at?

And why are they not part of the mainline kernel?
