archives could use .tar.7z format since 7-Zip support multi-threaded operation which is 4 times faster on Quad Core than single-threaded operation lzma-utils don't support multi-threading. 7-Zip (A) 4.65 Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-02-03 p7zip Version 4.65 (locale=C,Utf16=off,HugeFiles=on,4 CPUs) RAM size: 3949 MB, # CPU hardware threads: 4 RAM usage: 419 MB, # Benchmark threads: 1 Dict Compressing | Decompressing Speed Usage R/U Rating | Speed Usage R/U Rating KB/s % MIPS MIPS | KB/s % MIPS MIPS 22: 3134 99 3065 3049 | 31202 100 2812 2817 23: 3007 99 3081 3064 | 30790 100 2811 2819 24: 2899 100 3119 3117 | 30373 100 2816 2818 25: 2775 100 3171 3169 | 29901 100 2807 2812 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Avr: 100 3109 3100 100 2811 2816 Tot: 100 2960 2958 7-Zip (A) 4.65 Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-02-03 p7zip Version 4.65 (locale=C,Utf16=off,HugeFiles=on,4 CPUs) RAM size: 3949 MB, # CPU hardware threads: 4 RAM usage: 850 MB, # Benchmark threads: 4 Dict Compressing | Decompressing Speed Usage R/U Rating | Speed Usage R/U Rating KB/s % MIPS MIPS | KB/s % MIPS MIPS 22: 10658 348 2975 10368 | 123083 398 2789 11105 23: 11343 377 3064 11557 | 119459 393 2778 10931 24: 9594 344 3002 10315 | 118758 397 2771 11017 25: 9739 367 3026 11119 | 114618 390 2762 10778 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Avr: 359 3017 10840 395 2775 10958 Tot: 377 2896 10899
What is this a suggestion for? We don't repackage upstream tarballs. If you are suggesting that, it is a pretty insane request.
What's more, there are tar.lzma tarballs, but they're superseded by tar.xz tarballs (we're not using them, probably cause the final version of the utils has yet to come, but upstream of a few packages already provides them).
