Description Robert Bradbury 2009-05-12 12:09:43 UTC
I normally run my system with the top panel having a monitor which in small windows show CPU/MEMORY/NETWORK/DISK usage. This is a very useful tool to monitor what the system is doing. After the most recent round of upgrades (1 month's worth) the monitor no longer shows up on the panel. I have got a small "System Monitor" icon which will startup a program which allows you to monitor various resources but there is nothing "active" in the panel.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Unsure. Over the last month there were several dozen upgrades which I've added in the last few days.

Actual Results:
No active monitor of system resource usage on the panel.

Expected Results:
The panel monitor should run and display my selections (resources, colors, update frequency, etc).

.gnomerc-errors does contain the following message:
** (nautilus:18821): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported

I don't know whether this is related or not.
If this is the cause of the problem, how far back do I need to take nautilus to get the panel monitor capability back?

I assume you mean the system-monitor applet. I have that on all my boxes, with various versions of gnome on them, and it's working on all of them. Maybe the config just got lost?

What happens if you try to add it to the panel? (right-click on panel, select add, find System Monitor in the list) If that fails, what is the error? Do you have any errors related to gnome-system-monitor in your .xsession-errors file?

Yes, that works. The problem is that the system monitor program and the system monitor panel applet use the same icon. Since the system monitor program icon was already on the panel (and since it starts up the system monitor program) I thought the "add" system monitor option added that and not the applet.

Sorry for the trouble and thanks for the answer.
