In step 16, right after the code listing titled "Code listing 16.3: Running genkernel", I'd like to suggest adding text: "Once the kernel build is complete, the kernel version and initrd version names are given, with instructions to use them for configuration of the boot loader. Be sure to write these names down for use when we get to Configuring a Boot Loader (step 23)." I know this is a well-duh for experienced folks, but for first-timers this is essential information that ought to be highlighted. I missed it, and ended up having to wipe my partitions and redo the entire process. Thank you! Sean McMullin cicero3558@yahoo.com
Created attachment 16356 [details, diff] Add sentence about writing down the paths of kernel and initrd I haven't used a full paragraph for this as I think a sentence is sufficient.
There is a slight typo in the patch. "configurationfile" should be "configuration file".
Tx. Typo fixed. Patch committed.
It would be nice to at the very least link to a resource that guides step by step to make this initrd. Even for a somewhat seasoned Linux User, if it's done for the first time, it's kinda hard.
The initrd is created by genkernel. Manually creating an initrd is out the scope of the document.
