As part of my weekly Gentoo update, I updated my stable xorg-server from the 1.3 series to the 1.5 series. However, as soon as I press some non alphanumeric key on my keyboard, my computer freezes (unresponsive to keyboard commands). No noise increase from fans or hard drives. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge -uDN world # contaning the xorg update 2. startx # I am an init 3 user 3. Press Ctrl, Shift, Alt, Backspace on the keyboard Actual Results: The computer becomes unresponsible to keyboard and mouse, clock in desktop environment (any) freezes. The only way to get a working system is to turn off, restart and stay away from X. Expected Results: A X11 server that is not freezing.

Hmm... 05 Apr 2009; Markus Meier <maekke@gentoo.org> xorg-server-1.5.3-r5.ebuild: x86 stable, bug #251832 so, does not compute. > However, as soon as I press some non alphanumeric > key on my keyboard, my computer freezes (unresponsive to keyboard commands). > No noise increase from fans or hard drives. > 1. emerge -uDN world # contaning the xorg update > 2. startx # I am an init 3 user > 3. Press Ctrl, Shift, Alt, Backspace on the keyboard > Most probably invalid, but let's start with the basics. Did you already try evdev driver and read about hal/evdev issues ?
I do not have HAL installed and do not want to. According to http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.5-upgrade-guide.xml , using evdev is not mandatory in this scenario. Just to be sure, I tried adding Option "AutoAddDevices" "false" in the ServerFlags section of xorg.conf. It changed nothing. Also, using x11-misc/xvkbd (a virtual keyboard) triggers the freeze. I also have MTRR warnings printed on my console absent from the Xorg log file, warnings that were absent in 1.3 series. I also found a forum thread on using evdev without HAL. I will give it a shot next weekend, when I will regain access to my Gentoo computer.
Could you try temporarily renaming xorg.conf to xorg.conf.old and start Xorg again? Thanks
Created attachment 191659 [details] Xorg configuration using evdev Trying to use evdev for keyboard and mouse did not work. Neither moving away the xorg.conf file (or I fact, deleting the symbolic link xorg.conf to the real file). In both cases, I still get a computer freeze.
Could you please attach your Xorg.0.log when you remove xorg.conf? Thanks

I just updated xorg-server to 1.5.3-r6 from r5 during an emerge -uDN world and the problem is solved, either with or without an xorg.conf file. No more freezes.
Wow... hum... Right. Well, that's great. Maybe one of the upstream patches fixed that. In any case, thanks for the follow-up, it's appreciated. Closing
