Description Mamoru KOMACHI (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-19 04:57:03 UTC
Hi. I created a new Gentoo source mirror in Japan.

Server name: ftp://ftp.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/GENTOO
Server IP: 133.11.205.121
Mirror Admin: Mamoru KOMACHI
Mirror Admin E-mail: <usata@gentoo.org>

The server is Sun Blade 1000 with 4GB of RAM and
its bandwidth is 400Mbit. Maxium connection is
limited to 300. It syncs with ftp.ussg.indiana.edu
every four hours starting at 0:00 UTC.

P.S.
I was already added to gentoo-mirrors list since
this server now serves as rsync4.jp.gentoo.org ;-)

I've sent you some instructions on accessing our private distfiles mirror.
Please update your scripts to point to this mirror.

After I verify a couple of syncs, I'll update our mirrors page with your
server info.

Thanks.

I updated ftp.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp to point to the private mirror server.
Thanks for the instruction.

Can you verify that syncing is happening every 4 hours, starting at 00:00
local time? For the few checks that I've made, the syncs have been around 5
hours old. After I checked, I don't know when the actual syncs occurred.
The times below are in date -uR format.

Timestamp	Time checked
02 Sep 17:55	23:07
02 Sep 21:55	03 Sep 02:59
03 Sep 17:55	23:05

Oh, I had set the job to update starting at 00:00 UTC, so
I reset it to sync starting at local time(JST) and it seems it is
syncing every four hours.

> date

> date -u
Thu Sep 4 12:43:20 GMT 2003
> ls
20030904@07:00:00GMT 20030904@11:00:00GMT
> cat /work/ftp/GENTOO/distfiles/timestamp.chk
Thu, 04 Sep 2003 08:55:00 +0000

But shouldn't the sync start at 00:00 UTC instead of local time(JST)?
I have no idea why it synced by 5 hours late (it couldn't have been
late by 5 hours since I set it sync every 4 hours??).
Comment 5 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-09-05 08:55:02 UTC
I didn't see when the syncs occurred, so I don't know when they happened. They
weren't 5 hours late, just that they hadn't sync'd in 5 hours. Since they should
be within 4 hours, they were only 1 hour late at the time (plus time until when
they did sync).

As for UTC/local time, syncing on a local time schedule alleviates the load to
mirror so not all mirrors are syncing at the same time.

I also misunderstood some mirror information on our end, so I may have been
checking inaccurately. I just checked your server, and it was OK. Now that I
know what I'm doing, a few more checks, and I'll have the mirrors page updated
to include this server.

I've done some more monitoring, and the server hasn't had any problems. I'm
ready to add it to the mirrors page. Is there a name (company, organization,
school, etc.) that you'd like is to refer to?
Comment 7 Mamoru KOMACHI (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-07 00:17:40 UTC
Yeah, I'd like to have it as ``University of Tokyo'' ftp mirror server.
Thank you very much for your all trouble.
Comment 8 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-09-07 15:13:20 UTC
The mirrors page has been updated and the changes should be visible in about
30 minutes or so.

Thanks for supporting Gentoo.
