Now that smbfs is gone, it would be helpful if mount.cifs was included in the standard Stage3 files; smb/cifs is a fairly quick and simple way to import eg; a portage directory, and unlike the smbfs client mount-cifs is a separate package. Reproducible: Always
That involves adding an extra package to the system set...a package which will not be used by most people and is definitely not needed for a running system.
Fair enough, but there are a lot of Windows machines about, and it's useful to be able to talk to them when installing Gentoo for the first time. And the package itself is a few KB.
If anything, you want it on the installcd, not in the stage3. If that's the case, that's a completely different story.
Reopening
I just added net-fs/mount-cifs to the autobuild installcd specs on all arches. The next round of autobuilds will have this package.
In fact I meant the Stage3 file, since I don't use the Gentoo installcd. However,it would probably be useful there as well. I tend to see it used when building systems from scratch via Stage 3; it's a quick way to haul files off a Windows box which has connectivity, until the stage 3 setup can get on line.
