Description Thomas Albers 2009-05-01 17:49:05 UTC
After upgrade from 2.6.27-r8 to 2.6.28-r5 kernel the X server can only be started once. When the X server is shut down and started again only a black screen is seen.

I am using ati-drivers-8.552-r2 and an onboard Radeon HD3200.

Steps to reproduce:
1. startx (X server starts)
2. Ctrl-Alt-Del (X server shuts down)
3. startx (X server shows only a black screen)

Reproducibility: always

i have been having the same problems for quite a while now - still not fixed with current drivers (x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.593, xorg-server-1.5.3-r5).

my vga is: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4550]

thanks

I am having the same problem but instead of a black screen I get a nice big long kernel panic that scrolls down the screen for a few seconds.
Comment 6 Andreas Nüßlein 2009-05-23 10:53:45 UTC
..
do you guys use 2 monitors as well?

maybe it's got something to do with that.
Comment 7 Nicholas Doyle 2009-05-23 13:10:03 UTC
This problem occurs both when I am using one monitor or two monitors. The number of monitors does not seem to be relevant.
Comment 8 Ben Kuhn 2009-06-03 21:15:39 UTC
Same problem with my HD4850...both with single and dual monitors.
Comment 9 Nicholas Doyle 2009-06-29 17:40:57 UTC
This was fixed for me in x11-drivers/ati-drivers-9.6 on kernel 2.6.28-gentoo-r3.
Comment 10 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-17 21:07:50 UTC
Closing fixed as per comment #9.

Thanks for the follow up.
