Existing bug report identified:

Bug 572027 – gconf-sanity-check-2 exits with status 256
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572027

With advisory/solution at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572027#c5

"gconf-sanity-check-2 always expects there to be a
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system directory, irrespective of whether /etc is really
the GConf sysconfdir value."
Comment 3 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-01 11:41:39 UTC
commited to 2.26 without a bump. Thanks for reporting and finding the upstream report.
