Description brent 2009-04-26 12:39:22 UTC
getting an ACCESS DENIED error when trying to emerge the above ebuild.

i'm wondering if this is because the device is in use..?

i'll include a snippet and i'll include the full build log as an attachment because there's a lot of output..

Are you inside a virtualbox or on your live system?
Your VIDEO_CARDS="radeon radeonhd fglrx
virtualbox" look a little strange.
You need either ati or virtualbox, first for your livesytem and second inside a virtualbox which is running gentoo.

live system. virtualbox isn't even running.

i should think they'd be able to co-exist? what i really don't understand is why:
1. virtualbox runs fine without this ebuild
2. it's being pulled in as a dependency
3. it's a NEW INSTALL:
zsh 5695 % emerge -uDNvva world
superuser access is required... adding --pretend to options.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ... done!
[ebuild N ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-virtualbox-2.2.0 USE="dri -debug" 0 kB [0]

yeahhh, see above. this is the live system. not even running virtualbox at the moment, and for the live of me i can't figure out why it's pulling it in as a dependency.

Because you have "virtualbox" written into the VIDEO_CARDS variable in your /etc/make.conf file.

then why is it trying to install it now, and never tried to before? is it because of version 2.2.0?

i've removed virtualbox from my make.conf's VIDEO_CARDS and it seems it's still getting pulled in, via guest-additions:

zsh 2960 # emerge -uDNvva world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ... done!

[ebuild U ] app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions-2.2.0 [2.1.4] USE="X" 0 kB

Total: 3 packages (1 upgrade, 1 new, 1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Would you like to merge these packages?

if i had to guess, it has something to do with the 2.1.4->2.2.0 version update to the tree. i just find it odd that 2.1.4 virtualbox-guest-additions never required it (i'd almost think it would).
Comment 6 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-26 15:49:15 UTC
Used on server:
app-emulation/virtualbox-bin
app-emulation/virtualbox-modules
app-emulation/virtualbox-ose
app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-additions

Used on guest:
app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions
x11-drivers/xf86-input-virtualbox
x11-drivers/xf86-video-virtualbox

And read the messages emerge gives you:
From virtualbox-guest-additions:

"Warning:"
"this ebuild is only needed if you are running gentoo"
"inside a VirtualBox Virtual Machine, you don't need"
"it to run VirtualBox itself."
