Description ??? 2009-04-24 17:41:20 UTC
I get the following error message when doing emerge -uDN world -av

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

x11-libs/xcb-util:0

  ('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.3', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    ~x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.3 required by ('installed', '/', 'x11-wm/awesome-3.2.1-r3', 'nomerge')
    (and 1 more)

  ('ebuild', '/', 'x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.4', 'merge') pulled in by
    x11-libs/xcb-util required by ('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/cairo-1.8.6-r1', 'nomerge')

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in the
dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can not be
installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page
or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

I believe that this is due to xcb-util-0.3.3 being hard masked and awesome depending on xcb-util-0.3.3.

After manually upgrading to xcb-util-0.3.4 awesome still works fine for me. So I guess awesome should probably just depend on xcb-util-0.3.4 or as awesome's README says >xcb-util-0.3.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -uDN world -av on a system with x11-wm/awesome installed

emerge --info:

Hiya, I've just come to this bug based on the mask of xcb-util-0.3.4. I'm wondering why xcb-util got masked, rather than (as the reporter mentioned) awesome's dependencies being changed to allow >=xcb-util-0.3.4. Is there a reason awesome's set to use ~x11-misc/xcb-util-0.3.3? I've CCed the X11 team, since this related to xcb-util which they maintain...
Comment 2 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-25 11:39:26 UTC
Ok, so this relates to bug 266944, where it was reported that xcb-util-0.3.4 breaks the keyboard bindings of awesome. That's why awesome's version was locked down. The latest git version seems to be working, but no one's bisected it to find the precise patch.
Comment 3 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-29 18:54:48 UTC
Latest git of awesome or xcb-util?
Comment 4 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-29 19:19:32 UTC
I think I meant latest git of awesome, sorry for the confusion...
Comment 5 Tassilo Horn 2009-05-02 09:33:34 UTC
There's a new awesome release (3.3_rc1) which should fix this bug. See http://awesome.naquadah.org/download/.

3.3_rc1 depends on >=x11-proto/xproto-7.0.15.
>=x11-proto/xproto-7.0.15 is p.masked.

Matsuu, I've unmasked libxcb and friends, feel free to merge your package.mask entry into my own in profiles/releases/2008.0/package.mask.

Thanks

thank you for your advice. I also moved >=x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.4 and >=x11-wm/awesome-3.3 to 2008.0.
