Description Mirek Kratochvil 2009-04-15 13:53:45 UTC
Hi,

I want to ask why xorg-server depends on following packages:
media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi
media-fonts/font-adobe-75dpi

Dependency seems illogical, not needed (as no one wants to use those fonts; and who really wants, knows it), and causes at least those problems:

1] by default configuration, bitmap fonts are prioritized above .ttf fonts of same name; therefore (for example) helvetica fonts are rendered ugly in many applications.

2] using those fonts somehow causes problems with several configurations (one is radeon+xnest, second is just radeon and upgraded system. I will ask the corresponging people to provide detailed affected package versions, as soon as I can.) Screen with example is at [1], sorry for linking tinypic.
(Also, I know this is more like a problem of pango/xft/another renderer; but is triggered only by those fonts.)

3] bug #249190 and this xorg-server dependency inevitably cripple all peaceful efforts to remove both adobe-fonts; so user always ends at rm -rf.

I guess that given enough search, one could come with more issues.
It would be nice to have the dependencies disabled, so gentoo systems are 100% usuable without any deeper xft know-how.

If I missed a good reason why the fonts MUST be installed, please explain it.

Thanks
exa

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.install xorg-server
2.see the fonts are bad

Removed in 1.6
still present in 1.3 and 1.5
Not sure why it is needed in 1.5.
@remi/donnie: do you know why it is still at 1.5. I thought it is needed only for 1.3

I think you're having driver issues rather than font issues...

Please attach your xorg.conf, your Xorg.0.log and please paste the output of emerge --info

Needed for some utilities that are part of 1.5, xorgcfg wasn't it?

There are too many issues being mentioned in this bug to ever be productive :
 - core X fonts should render properly, if not, that's a bug of its own
 - toolkits and applications are responsible for the fonts they use, if you have issues with specific apps and toolkits, please file bugs against them
 - we are slowly but surely working on getting rid of core X fonts as much as possible

In short, please don't hesitate to open new bugs for each issue you might have.

Thanks
