Description Erik Wasser 2009-04-15 06:46:50 UTC
I've updated recently from xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r6 to xorg-server-1.5.3-r5 so I have to tweak my "xorg.conf" to a new "level". During this procedure I have to restart the X server severel times. But hitting CTRL-ALT-Backspace or shutting down the server via the normal (logout) way leads to a black screen. It's not a crash here because CTRL-ALT-DEL will shut down the computer, the screen goes just black and I've to restart. That's pretty time consuming. B-)

To me the drivers seems so really stable because yesterday I've suffered from bug #232507 ("(EE) end of block range 0xaffff < begin 0xb808e1c0") with the same configuration.

To be clear: the display is fine, xinerama is working too, so it's just a restart issue.

I'm using 3 ATI/Readon cards. In the x.org 1.3 configuration I was using the radeon driver but switching to "ati" in the x.org 1.5 configuration doesn't change the behavior at all.

What do you need more?
1) emerge --info
2) /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3) /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Please choose. B-)

I have a similiar problem with xorg-server 1.5.3 and xf86-video-ati:
After cold boot, I often get a black screen instead of the kdm login screen.

Restarting /etc/init.d/xdm fixes this.

This happens with 6.12.1-r1 and 6.12.2.

So, I downgraded to 6.8.0-r1 and it did not happen yet with that version.

Using KDE 4.2.2. Kernel 2.6.27/2.6.28.

I take that back. It also happens with 6.8.0-r1.

Try to disable xcomposite extension and aiglx in your xorg.conf
Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Sorry, I can't give you any more infos. I've switched to a nvidia card.
