I use wpa_supplicant and the rtl8180 kernel module for my Wireless PCI card to connect to my wireless router. It works fine with kernel 2.6.25-gentoo-r9. However, updates to later kernels destroy the functionality. My latest attempt was to upgrade to kernel 2.6.27-gentoo-r8 but after the reboot it fails to connect. It does not help to downgrade to wpa_supplicant-0.5.*, so it seems different from other bugs reported here. iwlist --scanning works but shows wrong signal quality imho. wpa_supplicant gives as an error message 4-Way Handshake failed - pre-shared key may be incorrect but I think the key is correct as it works with an earlier version of the kernel module. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. reboot with new kernel 2. start wpa_supplicant 3. watch endless connection and reconnection taking place Actual Results: no wpa connection Expected Results: wpa connection to wireless router -----------------snip--------------------------- Apr 14 01:49:24 linux1 wlan0: associate with AP 00:01:02:03:04:05 Apr 14 01:49:24 linux1 wlan0: deauthenticated Apr 14 01:49:25 linux1 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:01:02:03:04:05 Apr 14 01:49:25 linux1 wlan0: authenticated Apr 14 01:49:25 linux1 wlan0: associate with AP 00:01:02:03:04:05 Apr 14 01:49:25 linux1 wlan0: RX ReassocResp from 00:01:02:03:04:05 (capab=0x411 status=0 aid=1) Apr 14 01:49:25 linux1 wlan0: associated Apr 14 01:49:28 linux1 wlan0: disassociated Apr 14 01:49:29 linux1 wlan0: associate with AP 00:01:02:03:04:05 Apr 14 01:49:29 linux1 wlan0: deauthenticated Apr 14 01:49:30 linux1 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:01:02:03:04:05 --------------------snip ------------------------------ and this repeats lspci | grep Belkin gives 00:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Belkin Device 700f (rev 20) from /var/log/messages: driver registers Apr 14 02:00:20 linux1 rtl8180 0000:00:0e.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNKB] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10 Apr 14 02:00:20 linux1 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'pid' Apr 14 02:00:20 linux1 phy0: hwaddr 00:01:02:03:04:05, RTL8185vD + rtl8225z2

The problem does not appear any more with kernel linux1 2.6.29-gentoo-r5. After an update I can connect to my access point. I guess it was a driver issue.
