Does retrying yield another result?
I.e. does it also do:
/bin/sh: line 1: 3037 Segmentation fault build/genmodes > tmp-modes.c

It does yield another, but similar result:

build/genpreds /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.3.2-r3/work/gcc-4.3.2/gcc/config/i386/i386.md > tmp-preds.c
/bin/sh /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.3.2-r3/work/gcc-4.3.2/gcc/../move-if-change tmp-constrs.h tm-constrs.h
echo timestamp > s-constrs-h
/bin/sh: line 1: 1313 Segmentation fault build/genpreds /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.3.2-r3/work/gcc-4.3.2/gcc/config/i386/i386.md > tmp-preds.c

Comment 4 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-13 00:13:58 UTC
Random segmentation faults come most likely from failing hardware. Please check your RAM (emerge -s memtest) and your CPU (emerge cpuburn).
Comment 5 Peter Alfredsen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-13 00:30:42 UTC
*urgh* Looks like hardware problem.

I thought that too, but I ran memtest and under windows ran prime95 and orthos for quite a while and got no errors. The kernel compiles just fine. Only gcc fails. Everything else works. Odd.
