When you upgrade kernel like that, you should always watch stderr right after you exit menuconfig and recheck all the menus every once in awhile.

How about running "make oldconfig" after you copied the .config file into the new kernel?

P:S Anyways, I dont have lots of knowledge of those .c files as it normally works fine on my other boxes.
