Description Daniel Klaffenbach 2009-04-06 10:14:28 UTC
I am using NetworkManager 0.7 and NM handles wired connections without any problems. I can also see all the wireless networks which are available. When I click on a network a dialog for entering WPA/WEP keys pops up. But when I click "connect" nothing happens.
I have tried nm-applet and the KDE plasma-networkmanager.

In dmesg I saw messages like:
Associated...
Disassociated by local choice (reason 3)

This is my system log:

FWIW, I tried networkmanager with several distros (knoppix, ubuntus, fedora...) on 3 laptops (eeepc 900, Dell inspiron 6000, dell latitude e6400) and it has a failure rate of 100%. I have an alcatel ST580 router, basic WEP.
wicd OTOH has a success rate of 100%
Router used to be in the same room, is now in the garage, failure/success rates have stayed the same.

Well, on my other machines NM works great. And I forgot to mention that WLAN with wpa_supplicant also works on this machine - so it is not a driver issue.

The main problem is here:

Apr  6 11:14:01 [NetworkManager] <info>  (wlan0): supplicant manager state:
idle -> down_

and NM can't change interface state.

Apr  6 11:13:59 [NetworkManager] supplicant_interface_acquire: assertion
`mgr_state == NM_SUPPLICANT_MANAGER_STATE_IDLE' failed

For me it looks like you've got a second process running which is using wpa_supplicant (/etc/init.d/net.wlan0 maybe?).

If you're using networkmanager - you can't use any gentoo's specific network configuration.

so far I've tested NM on few laptops:
Asus G1S
Dell Precision M4300
Dell Latitude E6500
Aces Aspire 5705
Aces Aspire (different model)
Toshiba Tecra S100

All worked perfectly with NM. 100/100 success rate. All with WPA/WPA2 though (never tested WEP).

Hmm. I remerged nm-applet today and both nm-applet and KDE's plasma NetworkManager applet are working. I am closing the bug as the problem has gone for me.

BTW: I was not using net.wlan0 (didn't even create it).

I've run into this issue too from a clean amd64 stage3 install.
I had to upgrade to dbus-1.3.0-r1 in order to get NetworkManager (and all it's frontends) to work again.
