I have seen it on my system also, though it was not reproducible - also amd64/2008.0/desktop and gcc 4.3.2. The operation progress stopped as an 'awk' process, as it seems, went on an infinite loop. I was unable to SIGKILL it, so decided to reboot. After a reboot revdep-rebuild worked fine. Will provide emerge --info once I get home.
Which version of gentoolkit is this?
I have the latest stable version of gentoolkit installed. As Andrey suggested I recompile the system rebooted and it is running again. But g-wrap-1.9.6-r3 is not compiling on either of my system AMD64 nor x86
