VrtualBox OSE no longer requires bridge-utils to use any of the network options available in the VirtualBox GUI. I believe the change happened with version 2.1.0, as they changed the way networking was handled in that release. I have tested each networking option without bridge-utils installed on my system and everything works. I would assume the binary version works the same way, but I do not have it installed and can't afford to lose the OSE version while I test it. Reproducible: Always
(In reply to comment #0) [..] True, net-misc/bridge-utils and sys-apps/usermode-utilities are no longer required as *mandatory* dependencies for "standard" virtualbox networking. On a side note is still possible to use TAP interfaces in certain advanced setups (in conjunction with bridge-utils) since is possible to connect the guest network interface to any host interface.
I would argue that since such advanced setups require you to go through and configure bridge-utils manually, the users that need it will also be able to (and know to) install bridge-utils. At the very least it could be made into a use flag.

These have been included in the portage tree, marking as fixed. However, the -9999 ebuild still lists it and should probably also be updated.
