Ooops - sorry about that - dodgy key bindings!

I'm using an ancient, headless i586 and rely on serial console support.
Kernels built by the genkernel utility include serial support as a module,
as a result serial console support is not available - serial support needs to
be compiled into the kernel in order for this to work.

specifically, what needs enabled? Just serial console support under character
devices?

Standard / Generic serial support needs to be compiled into the kernel rather
than as a module. Once that's enabled you then need to select 'console on
serial port' as an option.
