Description Daniel Klaffenbach 2009-03-25 08:10:29 UTC
I am on a fresh and clean installation of Gentoo and did install NM-0.7. NetworkManager (the service) runs, but it does not work. I've tracked down the problem to "nm-system-settings" which should be launched somehow by dbus or NM.
"ps aux|grep nm-system" gives me an empty result.

When I launch "nm-system-settings --config /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf" manually from a console (or via /etc/init.d/local), NetworkManager starts working.

I did observe this problem on a amd64 box last week and ony my own x86 laptop.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 2 Daniel Klaffenbach 2009-03-27 13:54:06 UTC
I investigated this a little further and the message "Trying to start the supplicant" indicates that NM also is not able to start wpa_supplicant (aka: wireless does not work either).
So I did check my dbus setup and ran "revdep-rebuild" - but everything was OK.

Now I remerged dbus today and the problem mystically went away.

The strange thing is that this was a _clean_ and _fresh_ system. I started out with a stage3-tarball (weekly build), compiled system, dbus, hal, NM, X and so on. And it did not work. I did not change any USE flags.

One can say this problem is solved now, but in my opinion there is still something wrong (this is why I left the bug open). At least we could notify the users with elog in the NM ebuild that if they encounter any problems they should re-merge dbus.
Comment 3 Robert Piasek (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-21 13:50:58 UTC
It's a dbus - and not NM specific problem.

Dbus doesn't start services on-demand as it should. Usually downgrading, restarting, and upgrading (even to the same version) solves the problem. I didn't manage to get to the root of this problem yet.

Comment 4 Ferry 2009-05-26 16:47:25 UTC
Same issue. ~amd64. Cleanly installed about a month ago from stage3. Downgraded to dbus 1.2.1, rebooted, remerged 1.2.12 (current highest ~amd64) and all was fine. Also noted X keeps working now. Using dhcpcd for the dhcp client, emerging networkmanager clearly stated I had to remove a hostname option from the dhcpcd.conf, which I did, but it still kept changing my hostname. Didn't really care for the hostname, but because it did that I could only log on to X, about 95% of the apps wouldn't start. Why is beyond me, afaik gentoo disables tcp connections to X by default (I presume it uses sockets) but it's gone now. Could very well be some other update fixed it though, haven't looked at this issue for a couple of weeks.

same thing here... after re-emerging dbus NM worked just fine
