The error "Unable to create data memory" is returned by genpname: /var/tmp/portage/app-text/texlive-core-2008-r4/work/texlive-20080816-source/libs/icu-xetex/tools/genpname/genpname.cpp

emerge texlive-core would fail with MAKEOPTS=j2. It works with MAKEOPTS=j1.
please try with texlive 2010 if this still happens; I've never seen this error :/
