I ran into following issue with dev-java/icedtea6 ebuild from java-overlay, when upgrading from icedtea6-1.3.1 -> icedtea6-1.4. In order to build dev-java/icedtea6 one needs to have existing java installation so it has following in his depend: || ( dev-java/icedtea6 dev-java/icedtea6-bin ) When I tried to upgrade from icedtea6-1.3.1 -> icedtea6-1.4, it discarded its existing installation (dev-java/icedtea6-1.3.1) from as dependency and required dev-java/icedtea6-bin explicitly. After I had emerged it using --nodeps, it no longer was requiring icedtea6-bin.

I've tested with both portage-2.1.6.7 and portage-2.2_rc27, and it worked in both cases: $ emerge -p dev-java/icedtea6 These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! [ebuild U ] dev-java/icedtea6-1.4 [1.3.1-r2] USE="-xrender%"
I should also note that I uninstalled virtual/gnu-classpath-jdk prior to testing, since the current dependency looks like this: || ( >=virtual/gnu-classpath-jdk-1.5 dev-java/icedtea6 dev-java/icedtea6-bin )

I had gnu-classpath-jdk instead and I uninstalled it before testing.
Are you able to reproduce this issue with latest portage version (no matter if 2.1 or 2.2)?
