I had exactly the same problem. I looked at the sources and it appears that spindown does not use a fifo any longer. However the gentoo init script still specifies a fifo: FIFOPATH="/var/run/spindown.fifo" and tries to start it with "-f ${FIFOPATH}" which doesn't work with this version. Aparently it needs something like: STATUSPATH="/dev/shm/spindown.status" and start it with -s ${STATUSPATH} This is as far as I got
Version sys-block/spindown-0.3.0 doesn't exists in portage, so we can close this bug.
