I succesfully updated gnome to 2.24 and deskbar-applet to 2.24.3 but when I try to add this applet to my panel it tells me that the applet terminated unexpectly, letting me choose to reload or not the applet, If I choose to reload the error comes out again. I tried in a x86 machine with the same package versions (same gnome version, same mono version, ecc) and I don't have this issue, could it be a amd64-only issue?
I tried deskbar-applet-2.24.2 , it crashes like .3 but running it in a terminal with -w argument, disabling all extensions and then add to panel seems to work. I don't know if it has anything to do with this, but I got trouble with deskbar-applet while updating from gnome 2.23. I couldn't update actually. First, I noticed that glchess could not run. Then I got a problem similar to yours (at this point I was still using deskbar-applet-2.23, while the rest of gnome was already 2.24). Running strace told me that some pycairo related files were missing, even though pycairo was installed (?). So I reemerged pycairo and it was ok. Try posting the strace output (in case, strace is a nice utility you can get with "emerge strace").

Now mine deskbar-applet doesn't crash anymore, I really don't know what was the problem since I've done a "emerge -e world" after upgrading to gcc-4.3.2-r3 ...
After running python-updater after the python-2.6 update 83 packages with reinstalled and the problem went away.
Let's just assume this is fixed. Please don't hesitate to reopen this bug if you have any more issues. Thanks
When will python-2.6 get stabilized? I thought it would take more time and, as deskbar-applet is already marked as "stable"... :-/
deskbar-applet depends on >=python-2.4, so that's fine.

Let me be clear: Current stable deskbar-applet (2.24.3) works fine with python 2.4. There is no problem there. During python upgrade, you must run python-updater to update *everything* installed against the old python to the new python, or random things break.
