This is really amusing (in the braindamaged way):

gcc -shared -pthread -fPIC python/stfl_wrap.c -I/usr/include/python2.6 \
                -I. libstfl.a -lncursesw -o python/_stfl.so
cd python && python -c 'import stfl'
mkdir -p /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/stfl-0.19/image//usr/lib64/python2.6/lib-dynload/
cp python/_stfl.so /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/stfl-0.19/image//usr/lib64/python2.6/lib-dynload/
cp python/stfl.pyc /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/stfl-0.19/image//usr/lib64/python2.6/
cp: cannot stat `python/stfl.pyc': No such file or directory
make: *** [install_python] Error 1
 *
 * ERROR: dev-libs/stfl-0.19 failed.

When I manually run the python -c 'import stfl' part the .pyc gets generated, but the build system shouldn't copy it around like that. It's hardcoded in the Makefile.snippet, so if anyone feels like cutting out that and making it use the python eclass ... :)

Fixed ebuild

This ebuild (and patch) fix the problem. It compiles *.py[co] files with python.eclass->python_mod_compile.

I had the exact same problem and the ebuild/patch attached in this bug report fixed it for me :)

Multilib patch and remove .pyc mentions --- python.eclass takes care of that
Comment 11 Thomas Anderson (tanderson) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-23 10:53:04 UTC
+ 23 May 2009; Thomas Anderson <gentoofan23@gentoo.org>
+ files/stfl-0.19-multilib.patch, stfl-0.19.ebuild:
+ Remove mention of stfl.pyc from Makefiles and stop automatic generation of
+ stfl.pyc by doing 'python -c stfl' in the buildsystem. Also fix a parallel
+ build bug produced (partly) by the stfl.pyc stuff. Thanks to Christian
+ Weiske for the report in bug #262006 and Ihar Hrachyshka for the initial
+ patch.
