Sejo has the gentoo.be domain, and wants to transfer ownership to us. I have emailed him regarding this matter in the hope of quick remedy. I await his reply/
I filed a support request with our registrar because I don't see .be on their dropdown list. ETA for response is <12 hours.
Trustees: The initial response from our registrar (GoDaddy), is that while they do sell new .be domains, they are unable to handle transfers of the domains. I'm trying to push a bit harder, but I'm not optimistic. So we're going to need to find a registrar that we can take it to as a new account. Ideally: - Offer contact/support in English. - They take Paypal (so I can pay them easily from my own account as the official Gentoo account is tied up in paperwork) - Have an OpenSRS-based registrar system. - Not overly expensive (the .be TLD charges registrars EUR3.025 (3 + 25/1000 euros, expressed explicitly to avoid the decimal separator variation). Sejo: 1. Does the .be TLD have any residency requirements for the domain ownership? .ca and .za do for example require citizenship or registered business presence. I tried digging in the dns.be site, but I kept ending up outside of the translated pages 2. Any suggestions for registrars? Your existing registrar mh.be has nothing on their site in english. 3. Do you see anything in your registrar's site about transferring away from them?
You might want to have a look at http://www.gandi.net/ I use their services and I am happy with them. .be can be registered by anyone: " the registration of domain names for the .BE TLD is granted on a "first come, first-served" basis. " See https://www.gandi.net/contracts/uk/be/pdf/
neysx: Since you use their services, two questions: 1. they say you can only register .be for 1 year max, any way for a longer period? gentoo.org is registered through 2017. 2. Any issues with specifying our own nameservers (the UltraDNS ones actually), or anything specific in that field I should be aware of in their UI after I get an account there? (I know a lot of registrars try to upsell on using their DNS hosting).

Right. 1 year, renewable. FYI, .be may not have an expiration date more than 2 years in the future. Some registrars allow you to register it for longer periods but they simply renew it for you and charge for it. I've seen really outrageous prices. Gandi has a different scheme: you can create a prepaid account, credit it and enable auto-renewal per domain (off by default). As long as there is money on your account, your domains get renewed automatically. They send you notices per email before the expiration period. FYI, I use gandi because they support open source. I've never heard anything bad about them. > 2. (I know a lot of registrars try to upsell on using their DNS > hosting). You are free to have it managed by their own servers (they have several modes of editing your zones, including raw mode with history) or by any other DNS, no extra cost either way. BTW, no need to cc me on infra-bugs, I'm on the alias
Sejo has replied to me with the following link to get the domain transferred. http://www.dns.be/en/home.php?n=42.005
(In reply to comment #6) > Sejo has replied to me with the following link to get the domain transferred. > http://www.dns.be/en/home.php?n=42.005 To make it even simpler, choose a registrar, request the transfer (from your point of view, it's the same as requesting a new domain), wait for confirmation. What happens between the initial request and the confirmation is between the registrar(s), dns.be and the current owner, nothing you should care or know about. If you really must know, dns.be will email the current owner who will have to confirm he's OK with the transfer and dns.be will then forward this confirmation to your chosen registrar. BTW, "owner" is wrong since you do not own a .be domain, you license it.
Thanks, I'll go ahead with Gandi then.
Transfer should be active in the Gandi system now. In sejo's hands.
klieber: please add gentoo.be to the UltraDNS domains.
should be done. let me know if there are any issues w/ the permissions.
klieber: works, thanks. I added web redirects for now just to the base www.gentoo.org for gentoo.be hits. The Belgian translation team can see if they want a translated base page later.
sejo confirms he's accepted it now. The registrar hasn't updated yet however, and I'm going to bed. In the morning (my time) I'll set the DNS servers in the domain. Dns.be (the TLD authority) only updates toplevel NS records once a day at 10am UTC+1 anyway (http://www.dns.be/en/home.php?n=42.005) which means we've missed the window for "today" anyway, so the new gentoo.org forward would only take effect at 9am UTC 2009/04/11.
(In reply to comment #12) > The Belgian translation team can see if they want a translated base page > later. That's funny. You must be American :) It's like asking our Canadian translators if they want a different home page in their own language ;-)
Still nothing on the Gandi's page, they claim it's still processing. neysx: actually, I'm a South African living in Canada. Other than lack of demand, I don't see any reason why we couldn't translate more of the base Gentoo site into other languages - esp those that have more documents translated already. If the site was translated, I don't see any problem with having gentoo.be end up at one of the national linguistic variants of Belgium: nl_BE, fr_BE, de_BE or their generic non-nationalized forms (would probably have to be fr or de, I think our nl is lacking)
Created attachment 191584 [details] Invoice for domain name. All actions completed in infra. Domain purchased, WHOIS up to date, UltraDNS integrated, hosting functional. Attached is the invoice for the domain transfer costs, paid on my credit card. tsunam: I'll send a paypal money request for the amount.
I vote yes to the payment
Robin should be reimbursed, thus I vote yes.
closed as funds have sent.
