Using a fresh install of Gentoo 1.4 staring with stage1 on a PIII 650 I got the
following error from fam-oss

configure: error: Didn't find mountlist.ml_name or mountlist->ml_hostname in
rpcsvc/mount.h

Then BOOM sadness envelopes the room.....

Actually the version of Gentoo is 1.4 not 1.4_rc4 but 1.4 was not availible

So, I forgot to list that I am using distcc and my CC options are the following:

-O3 -march=pentium3 -mcpu=i686 -funroll-loops -pipe

Found the error, I got rid of distcc for the fam-oss compile and it went through.  
This is still a bug but for distcc I guess

Please post config.log from the work directory, and emerge info.

fam-oss merges fine for me, with distcc (and your CFLAGS - on an athlon).
