Installing any game from portage, the directory "/usr/games/" gets "games:root" as owners, while all other games directories get the right "root:games". reopen with the output from emerge --info and a list of some of the games you tried.

Actually, /usr/games is created with the wrong owner and group during games_pkg_setup(): enewuser "${GAMES_USER_DED}" 36 /bin/bash "${GAMES_PREFIX}" "${GAMES_GROUP}" Default values are these: GAMES_PREFIX=/usr/games GAMES_USER_DED=games GAMES_GROUP=games And enewuser() (from user.eclass) does this: mkdir -p "${ROOT}/${ehome}" chown "${euser}" "${ROOT}/${ehome}" chmod 755 "${ROOT}/${ehome}" So indeed /usr/games will end up as games:root. Does the games user need a homedir? Otherwise, enewuser could pass -1 for the respective argument.
