Could vte please be bumped to something more recent, or an overlay posted? latest in portage is 0.17 and 0.19 is required to make this bug go away

The first one has nice pointers to commits we can backport to 0.17 to solve this issue.

This bug was also reproducible in roxterm (which also uses vte).
Upgrading to vte version 0.20.5 did not fix the problem.

I actually had this thing pop up again recently, but compiz had completely flaked out, perhaps unrelated to vte.
