Me too. New mplayer involved many new auto enabled useflags and I switched many of them off. Then it did not compile anymore. I narrowed this down: If I disable truetype useflag, mplayer compile breaks this way, otherwise it works.
The issue is caused by the disabled iconv use flag, you should really reconsider if you are 100% sure you want that. Anyway, MPlayer SVN r28939 fixes it (should probably apply to the gentoo version, too).
Should be fixed in newer versions in the tree, reopen if still an issue. Thanks
