Which contains the line:
checking for pdflatex... no

I'd say something is wrong with your TeX installation. Is package dev-texlive/texlive-latex installed? Or app-text/tetex?

I have both app-text/tetex and dev-tex/pdftex installed.

As far as I remember, /usr/bin/pdflatex should be a symbolic link pointing to pdfetex. Does this link exist on your system? If not, try running "texmf-update".

(Also, upgrading to TeXlive is strongly recommended, see the migration guide at
<http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/tex/texlive-migration-guide.xml>.)

After upgrading to TeXlive, the error is gone.

Good. :-)
Closing this bug as invalid, since it was not a gnuplot issue.
