Apparently Xboard (/usr/bin/xboard) tries to launch gnuchess, but /usr/games/bin/ is not in the default path and so xboard fails. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.type xboard 2. 3. Actual Results: xboard shows a dialog saying "Error writing to chess program gnuchess on localhost: gnuchess: Permission denied". Once you click OK, xboard closes Portage 2.0.48-r5 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r1) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.0-test2 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.rediris.es/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" USE="x86 oss 3dnow apm avi crypt cups encode foomaticdb gif jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmx motif mpeg ncurses nls pdflib png quicktime slang spell truetype xml2 xmms xv zlib gtkhtml gdbm berkdb readline arts bonobo svga tcltk java guile postgres sdl gpm tcpd pam ssl perl python esd imlib oggvorbis qt opengl cdr X gtk gnome alsa sse" COMPILER="gcc3" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" MAKEOPTS="-j2" AUTOCLEAN="yes" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" FEATURES="sandbox ccache"
Obviously, gnuchess is on /usr/games/bin/gnuchess
add yourseelf to the games group and regen your environment
lack of user input + bug seems to be they havent added themselves to games group ... ive gone ahead and updated the xboard ebuild to use games.eclass too, so if the user can run xboard, they should be able to run gnuchess
