I don't know enough about portage to tell if this is a duplicate of bug 259356 or bug 258072. But in those reports I don't see the same error messages (especially nothing about -fPIC).

have you always used a no multilib profile ? you havent flipped between hardened ones or multilib ones have you ?
Comment 2 Peter Weilbacher 2009-02-19 21:02:33 UTC
I have never used a different profile on this machine. I set up no-multilib during installation.
Comment 3 Peter Weilbacher 2009-02-22 22:33:04 UTC
Since the original try I again tried to emerge it again every now and then. For some reason it showed a different error each time.

I now remembered that the filesystem that I am trying on (JFS) is kind of special, so I now tried to set PORTAGE_TMP on an ext3. And glibc emerged without problems.

I guess this makes this bug invalid.
