AFAIK btrfs support was added in 2.6.28 so you should either use this package with <2.6.28 or use >=2.6.28 properly configured.
Correct. The live ebuild should technically work with later kernels, but still, better to use the in-kernel version. I should probably put a kernel restriction in the ebuild for 0.16...
