After upgrading from dvdstyler 1.5 to 1.7.2_beta4, the application is no longer usable. It runs and can edit but all attempts to generate fail. If the dvd you are trying to create contains a menu, the program segfaults. Using gdb, I determined that the call to avcodec_find_encoder(codec_id) ALWAYS fails and returns NULL. It cannot find ANY encoders. The segfault appears to be the result of poor error handling for this case. If you attempt to generate a very simple dvd with no menu and only one mpeg file, it does not crash, but reports that it has an "Unsupported codec for output stream #1.0". Note that it was able to find the "mpeg2video" DECODER but was unable to find an mpeg2video ENCODER: ================================================================ DVDStyler v1.7.2 beta 4 FFmpeg: libavformat 52.25.0, libavcodec 52.11.0, libavutil 49.14.0 Prepare Cleaning temporary directory Transcode/remultiplex Transcode video file: /home/edwardc/kino-projects/HHG/Episode1.mpeg Input #0, mpeg, from '/home/edwardc/kino-projects/HHG/Episode1.mpeg': Duration: 00:32:52.60, start: 0.178022, bitrate: 2547 kb/s Stream #0.0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480 [PAR 8:9 DAR 4:3], 7500 kb/s, 29.97 tb(r) Stream #0.1[0x1c0]: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 224 kb/s Output #0, mpeg2video, to '/home/edwardc/dvd/dvd/title0-0-0.vob.m2v': Stream #0.0: Video: 0x0000, yuv420p, 720x480 [PAR 16:15 DAR 8:5], q=2-31, 7500 kb/s, 29.97 tb(c) Output #1, mp2, to '/home/edwardc/dvd/dvd/title0-0-0.vob.audio0': Stream #1.0: Audio: 0x0000, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 224 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 Stream #0.1 -> #1.0 Unsupported codec for output stream #1.0 Error transcoding of /home/edwardc/kino-projects/HHG/Episode1.mpeg =================================================================== It seems that this is some sort of configuration/dependency mismatch, whose requirement did not get captured in the ebuild. I upgraded ffmpeg to 0.4.9_p20090201 but this made no difference. What's worse, I tried downgrading back to dvdstyler 1.5 and now IT no longer works. I have some additional info on this problem. It seems that when I upgraded to dvdstyler-1.7.2_beta4, it also updated my (very old but functional) ffmpeg. When I ran ffmpeg alone, it indicated that it had now been configured with '--disable-encode', and it would not encode anything. After I added the "encode" flag (and a raft of others) to ffmpeg in /etc/portage/packages.use, and re-emerged ffmpeg, things started working. I would suggest that the ebuild needs to be modified to add an "[encode]" flag requirement (eapi-2 syntax) at a minimum to the ffmpeg dependency.
thanks for the detailed report. I've removed dvdstyler-1.5* ffmpeg now starts at >=media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20090201[encode] USE=encode enforced. If you need another USE flag just add a comment here. Thankyou.
