Description Andrey Grozin gentoo-dev 2009-02-14 22:36:27 UTC
I have a dual boot computer: Gentoo / Windows XP russian. I use ru_RU.koi8r locale. The line in /etc/fstab is

/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs-3g uid=1000,gid=100,locale=ru_RU.koi8r 0 0

With ntfs3g-1.5130 (and earlier versions), I correctly saw directories and files in /mnt/windows with russian names. This is absolutely necessary, because, e.g., My Documents is translated to russian in Windows. After updating to ntfs3g-2009.2.1, I suddenly see some cryptic symbols instead of russian names. And

man ntfs-3g

no longer describes the use of "locale=value" for making national characters visible.

Alas, this is unusable for me (and, probably, for other users of non-english Windows). I have downgraded to 1.5130, and everything bis OK again.

Reproducible: Always

This is intentional by design: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.file-systems.ntfs-3g.devel/672 . Everything is now done in UTF-8 .

So, if I understand correctly, his problem is using ru_RU.koi8r locale,
instead of ru_RU.utf8 ?
Comment 3 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2009-02-17 21:29:13 UTC
This was intentionally done by upstream as Salah mentioned. Please see the 2009.1.1 changelog at http://www.ntfs3g.org/releases.html
Comment 4 Ronan Arraes Jardim Chagas 2009-08-22 20:06:19 UTC
Yes, I know this was intentionally done by upstream, but it just makes no sense. There is so much talk in that forum about this and the NTFS-3G developers said that they will fix this.

I think Gentoo must continue to support older versions (1.5130 that is what I'm using was just purge out from the tree) and let the new ones masked or without keywords.

Salah Coronya:

As I mentioned, I know it was done by upstream, that is why I'm asking to mask the package instead ask you to fix it. What they do just doesn't have any sense and it just isn't fine with non-English speakers users. NTFS-3g finally realized and will fix it.

Rafał Mużyło:

The problem is to use ntfs-3g without UTF-8 encoding locale. In my case, I use ISO-8859-1.

Patrick McLean:

The same thing I said to Salah.

I am also still using sys-fs/ntfs3g-1.5130 because of this issue. It has just disappeared from the tree. Could it be restored, please?

I'm attaching the Ebuild and the package for NTFS-3g 1.5130 while Gentoo devs doesn't make it available again.

Does this problem still exist with sys-fs/ntfs3g-2009.11.14?

We just stabilized sys-fs/ntfs3g-2009.11.14 in bug 300126 and could close this bug if it fixes this problem.

Well, it doesn't seem to be fixed because there is nothing on release history and I could not test it anymore since I changed my locale from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8.

This was purposely done by upstream, and I don't see why we would maintain ancient versions in portage just to carry a feature that upstream dropped.
