Description Mark Nowiasz 2009-02-13 23:21:55 UTC
After upgrading to qt-4.5.0_rc1, KDE's notification sounds stopped to work.
Normal audio/video playback works fine, and testing the sound (for example, using systemsettings) works as well - nevertheless, not a single notification sound is being played. It's a little bit annoying, since I'm used to getting a sound when new mail arrived.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. upgrade to qt-4.5.0_rc1
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Silence when logging in :-/

Expected Results:
The typical kde chime

Additional information:

When manually starting a program (in this case, konsole) which uses the notification service, I get the following error message:

konsole(16547)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::slotReceivedIdError: Error while contacting notify daemon "No such method 'event' in interface 'org.kde.KNotify' at object path '/Notify' (signature 'sssayasx')"

Comment 2 Nikos Chantziaras 2009-02-18 17:57:58 UTC
I've confirmed this. And it's worse than just sound. Notifications altogether aren't working with Qt 4.5 throughout KDE 4. For example, Kopete turns useless this way because there's no notification pop-up nor sound when someone starts a chat with you. The whole notification system (be it just sound or even dialogs and pop-ups) is dead.

IMO Qt 4.5 should be blocked by KDE 4.2.0 because this is a very serious bug.

Oops.

At least the severity of this bug should be raised. Trying to set it to "major".

Comment 4 Sokolov Nikolay 2009-02-19 18:17:12 UTC
Same here. Fixed by re-emerging all KDE packages, but after kdelibs update it has broken enough.
Comment 5 Ivan 2009-02-24 19:02:57 UTC
Also animated emoticons themes, which I use in KDE, aren't shown as animated in kopete talk-window
Comment 6 Martin Zidek 2009-02-24 22:29:54 UTC
Same here, rebuilding KDE does not help.
Comment 7 Matteo Azzali (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-02-25 07:36:28 UTC
KDE 4.2.0 is known to be not compatible with the 4.5 version of QT libraries.
Bugs are already being fixed upstream (some of them are patches to 4.4 bugs no more there).
This is the qt maintainer position : http://hwoarang.silverarrow.gr/?p=228

Actual solution is to mask Qt-4.5.x (Incidentally, I discovered that also avidemux_qt compiles fine with 4.4.x)

"In case you are a kde4 user you might encounter several bugs."

Er, not "might". "Will".

Right now, many people are simply wasting their time upgrading and then wondering for long periods of time what the hell is going on and then downgrade. Perhaps a big, fat warning when emerging KDE 4 with Qt 4.5 or emerging Qt 4.5 with KDE 4 (or both) might be in order.
Comment 9 Scott Thomson 2009-03-03 15:48:57 UTC
This bug has been resolved upstream and will be released in 4.2.1

Any chance for a backport?

Nope. Why we would do such thing when 4.2.1 is comming this week.
Comment 12 Dror Levin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-03-31 23:16:51 UTC
This seems to be fixed in 4.2.1, so this bug can be marked as RESOLVED.
Comment 13 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-01 13:40:59 UTC
Good i dont observe this on 4.2.2 too so resolving as upstream.
Thanks for testing.
