Currently, the nvidia-drivers (173.14.16) ebuilds include the following dependency:
<x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.99

Hence, portage always wants to downgrade to this xorg version. The drivers work fine with xorg 1.6 from the x11 overlay.

RESOLVED/FIXED

x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180 and newer allow =x11-base/xorg-server-1.6* (<1.6.99).

This is NOT a fix. The 180.x drivers are not compatible with many older cards, for example Geforce FX 5xxx. These cards need the 173.x.x drivers. And these drivers do work with x.org 1.6, if only the ebuild would let us install it.
