http://bugs.gentoo.org as a start page for people who want to report bugs really *needs* a change. One reason why there are so many duplicates is that people haven't learned how to search properly. I think if some of the information that is shown when the user clicks on (Help) right beside the search field - especially the section about using things like ALL with the search term - would result in much lesser duplicates. People might not click on help - they might feel experienced enough to use a search engine :-) - for example I wanted to report a bug about blackbox. I entered "blackbox" into the search field - the search engines gave me two results - none of it met what I wanted to submit and so I started to write. (bug #25772) roger identified this bug to be the same as #20239 -- and yes, its related. In that moment I realized that obviously he was using another search strategy than me, and this was *the first time* clicking on "Help" came into my mind. Maybe its just me - but I think we all read documentations - every day - who clicks on a help button before running in trouble? So please make some notes about special keywords like "ALL" on the *startpage* Maybe give some examples like "Search for 'ALL blackbox' instead of 'blackbox'" only. Or something like: "if you haven't read HELP yet - please READ IT NOW - no, really - DO IT - there is really important information given there" I am quite sure the number of dup-submits would get smaller that way. Thanks.
No time for gentoo dev stuff right now :(
thanks for pointing this out, in the guided format quicksearch I added some small changes to the previous paragraph about using "ALL" it's in bold and I hope that new bugs can be prevented this way.
