Jeremy, can you please confirm that you ran "emerge --config vmware-workstation" in between emerging and installing, as the note at the end of the ebuild asks you to?

I don't believe the two are related because the emerge --config vmware-workstation mainly sets up networking related settings. Though just to be complete I reran it, to the same result.
Discussed the bug with O.P. in #gentoo -- I don't think the "vmware" he's running is /opt/vmware/workstation/bin/vmware, but some unknown /usr/bin/vmware. Running /opt/vmware/workstation/bin/vmware resolved the issue.
