Currently we only have version 1.2 which is almost 3 years old,

Major changes, improvements, API changes, and bug fixes have occurred during this time period see:

submitted an updated ebuild, for review, in [java-experimental] with the caveat that it needs jettison, only in [java-experimental]

Dropped ~amd64 as dependencies not met.

It's better to use 1.2 here so that when it's bumped the next time it will work without changes.

What's the reason that junit support was dropped from the 1.3 ebuild?

added test cases in java-experimental.

added bug#257831 as dependency because it is needed as dep for tests.
