Following the removal of 'kerberos' from the default USE flags, during my anually manual --depclean run, I've detected that the following packages implicitly use kerberos libraries if existing w/o depending or iusing them: net-print/libgnomecups-0.2.3 media-sound/vorbis-tools-1.2.0-r2 net-print/gutenprint-5.1.7 gnome-base/libgnomeprint-2.18.5 net-print/gnome-cups-manager-0.33 Found by a revdep-rebuild after emerge -uvDN --with-bdep=y not doing anything. Are you sure that those were not indirect linking cases (as in: packages that were linked to kerberos libs due to overeager build process or an la file) ?
(In reply to comment #1) > Are you sure that those were not indirect linking cases > (as in: packages that were linked to kerberos libs > due to overeager build process or an la file) ? > Well, difficult to say, since the revdep-rebuild did fix it. However, at least vorbis-tools should be pretty stand alone. The others could be a libgnomeprint indirection. At simple test will be: emerge -1 mit-krb5 emerge -1 package_xxx emerge -C mit-krb5 and see if package_xxx is broken again. The system right now is consistent without any trace of krb5 (in the state right after the revdep-rebuild). I'll test that up later tonight.
Well, standalone, except for ogg123, which uses curl, which can depend on kerberos. Probably, with some help from a la file, that gets kerberos on the list directly, instead of just indirectly.

Neither vorbis-tools nor any other use an installed kerberos in any ways if not flagged for it. Probably you are right and the dependencies were introduced by no longer existant la files via curl and cups libs. Since it's a non-reproducible issue with an easy standard-fix (revdep-rebuild) I think is safe to close the bug as false alarm
