When I login with session type KDE 4.2 (from a kdm 3.5) I get a start screen, then the background gets black/white-checkered, the start sound is played, and no reaction to mouse clicks, Alt-F2 etc. occurs. I tried this with deleting ~/.kde4 before ... My .xsession-errors is attached ... Reproducible: Always

Your dbus seems not to be running, check if your dbus is working.
OK, the first .xsessionerrors was with ~/.kde4 nox existing. Trying to start KDE another time without deleting the created ~/.kde4 gives the .xsessionerrors (without dbus error) I'll attach immediately.

Just as a side note: /usr/share/kde4/services and /usr/share/kde4 had mode 700 before and where thus unreadable. This caused some more errors, but I already fixed it manually ...

OK, works for me after fixing all the permission stuff ...
Jens sorry for the delay: 1) the eclass was adjusted so the permission issue wont happen again 2) it even report which package break up the deps Since the updated eclass is in main tree for some time closing this as fixed.
