Description ProTech 2009-02-01 09:58:29 UTC
I'm a stable user, and want to use Gentoo to develop some applications in mono. This is now completely impossible.

I was able to use monodevelop 1.0 with mono 2.0.1 and monodoc 1.9 just fine a month ago.

But now stable users left with mono 1.2 and without monodevelop, as all versions except 1.9.1 was removed. The banshee and f-spot versions which are usable for stable users are old too (1.0 and 0.4).

The main problem is that mono 2.x is depending on monodoc 2.x, which in turn depends on gtk-sharp-2.12. And gtk-sharp-2.12 is a real problem, because with the help of tomboy, and glade-sharp, it needs a complete Gnome desktop upgrade to 2.24, which stable users don't have. I use some unstable packages in Gentoo and able to deal with breakage, but don't want to upgrade the whole Gnome, probably there is a reason why it's not stable yet.

So please think about stable users when deleting old packages and upgrading dependencies.

Reproducible: Always

The situation is a bit special since mono on Gentoo was abandonware for quite some time. I've had to delete a lot of old packages and stick to the "if it's in ~arch we only care about ~arch users" rule to keep the the problem manageable. When Gnome 2.24 goes stable, mono-2 will follow and this will improve dramatically, but until then, I'm sorry I can't help you if you're not using ~arch. FYI, Gnome is scheduled to go stable sometime in February.
