Can you retry with -r3 of webapp-config?
Believe it was app-admin/webapp-config-1.50.16-r1 (sorry for not replying to this point earlier). Bit reluctant to experiment with -r3 given what happened before. I don't have a backup site/machine that I can use for testing. Can any other watchers help?

Of course, I used the latest verions of joomla in the tree 1.5.25 and 1.7.3 www-apps/joomla selected: 1.5.25 protected: none omitted: 1.7.3
