This sounds like a missing gtk-doc-am dependency. Does it build if you install that package?
weird, I re-installed gtk-doc-am and it built fine this time, gtk-doc-am was up to date, so no clue what the problem was.
This seems to be an upstream bug though. depending on gtk-doc-am seems like a quick work around, but I don't see the need to install this package on my gtk-less servers. nor on my mediacenter 'embedded' minimal box. (just nitpicking really) And glib is used for other things non-gtk :)
inspecting the ebuild more closly, shouldn't these two lines simply be swapped? dev-util/gtk-doc-am doc? ( I mean, gtk-doc-am seems to be a documentatial thing and thus it would fit nicely under doc? also concidering that it's cousin dev-util/gtk-doc is under the doc flag there.

It has no dependencies, and is provided separately so that the full gtk-doc isn't a hard dependency of a package (which would would otherwise be the case). This file is used whenever eautoreconf is called for a package with an otherwise optional dependency on gtk-doc, and, as such, cannot itself be made optional (due to the way autoconf works).
Hmm, i suppose it's not so bad, still seems 'crufty' to me imo. anyway, it's a compile time dependancy so it won't get installed if i'd make a binary package and deploy that. I guess I'll live ...
